Common Questions About Business Owners & Executives

What retirement plan should a business owner use?

It depends on income, employee count, and how much you want to shelter. Solo 401(k) and SEP IRA fit owners with no employees. A 401(k) with profit sharing, or a cash balance plan for six-figure contributions, fits owners with staff. We model each against your numbers.

S-corp, LLC, or C-corp?

For most owner-operated businesses with meaningful profit, an S-corp election saves payroll tax once salary and distributions are set correctly. We coordinate the choice with your CPA and attorney, since the entity affects taxes, liability, and an eventual sale.

How do I plan for selling my business?

Start years early. Know your number, clean up the financials, reduce owner dependence, and structure the sale for taxes. Attend builds the personal plan that the sale has to fund, and coordinates with your CPA and attorney on the deal.

Do you help with buy-sell agreements and key-person coverage?

Yes. We review the financial side of buy-sell agreements, size key-person coverage, and can implement the policies. When a policy is placed through Attend, the carrier pays a commission that is disclosed in writing beforehand.

How should I pay myself as an owner?

Usually a reasonable salary plus distributions for an S-corp owner, sized to satisfy the IRS and minimize payroll tax. We model the split with your CPA each year.

What does Attend charge business owners?

A flat fee for a financial plan, and a tiered percentage of assets if Attend manages investments. You know the fee before any work starts.
